Planning in dynamic situations: some findings in complex supervisory control
Résumé
The main properties of planning in a particular class of dynamic situations — supervisory control situations — are reviewed on the basis of a theoretical framework and of some empirical results. A general conception of planning is derived from the literature on problem solving, which emphasizes abstraction and anticipation as the major ingredient of planning. Cognitive properties of supervisory control are summarized before describing their implications on the development of planning that is not an end in itself, but one of the possible means to keep the situation under control. Before reviewing the empirical results from the point of view of planning (abstraction and anticipation), the situations under study are briefly described from the planning point of view. Some implications of this kind of approach are drawn on operator's assistance and training.
