Evaluating the Strength of Arguments on the Basis of a Linguistic Analysis: A Synthesis

Abstract

In this contribution, we present several layers of linguistic analysis, the aim of which is to provide indications on the strengthof arguments in context. This contribution proposes a synthesis ofexisting resources to evaluate strength also used in opinion analy-sis, then it develops features which are proper to argument strength.Linguistic elements related to (1) the argument contents, (2) the dis-course structures associated with this argument (which may intro-duce restrictions), (3) the nature of argument schemes used, and (4)some rhetoric elements are investigated.
