« D’excellentes personnes assez obscures » Lecture critique de l’histoire et de l’historiographie de la danse à la fin du XIXe siècle

Abstract : Women entered the profession of ballet mistress at the end of the 19th century. They enjoyed a high reputation. Their contribution is indisputable in terms of choreography, pedagogy, knowledge production or concerning the defence of dance artists rights. They contributed to rehabilitating the deplorable images of dance and female dancers. However, they do not appear in the dance histories, which has long been biased by sexist representations and fantasy. Taking into account their career path makes it possible to review the usual historical narrative. In addition, it casts to the history of women and gender new light on a socio-professional category, which is generally known by sexist representations. Gender hierarchy is linked with other hierarchies – class and genre hierarchies – so that it will be a system and impose until today a narrative in conformity with legitimised social representations. The gender perspective allows to search the historiography and the ideological biases in it, and the artistic canons, especially the notion of modernity.
