Fixed volume versus fixed pressure liquid-vapor transition

Abstract

We consider the equilibrium conditions for nucleation at the liquid-vapor transition at fixed volume in contrast to the traditional fixed pressure treatment. Significant differences appear, particularly for the stability of the diphasic states, which strongly depends on the external conditions. (C) 2010 American Association of Physics Teachers.
