The Preachers and the Evolution of Liturgical Space in Italy. Thirteenth to Sixteenth Century

In medieval Dominican churches, the choir of the friars and main altar were partly hidden from the laity by a rood screen. The article deals with the process of choir relocation behind the main altar and removal of rood screens, in Renaissance Italy. It is a complex phenomenon, dependent on many factors, and not at all a uniform movement. The article highlights seven examples, using handwritten sources. Despite a lack of unity and a variety of situations, one common factor can be seen in all the cases discussed: the laity was an important factor in the renovation of the ecclesiastical space during the Renaissance, with renovations being designed to facilitate lay devotion and/or supported by lay patrons. The process of choir relocation corresponds closely to the wider context of reform, in which the Church sought to increase the involvement of the faithful in devotional and sacramental activities.
Dans les églises dominicaines, au XIIIe siècle, le chœur des frères et l’autel majeur étaient en grande partie cachés aux fidèles par un jubé. L’article s’intéresse aux processus de déplacement du chœur derrière l’autel majeur et de suppression des jubés à la Renaissance, en Italie. Il s’agit d’un phénomène complexe, dépendant de nombreux facteurs, et non d’un mouvement unifié. L’article met en lumière sept exemples, à partir de sources manuscrites inédites. Malgré un manque d’unité et une variété des cas, les laïcs sont toujours un facteur important de la rénovation de l’espace ecclésial, qu’elle ait été pensée pour promouvoir la dévotion des fidèles ou qu’elle ait été financée par des donateurs laïques (ou les deux). Le processus de déplacement du chœur est en liaison étroite avec un contexte plus large de réforme, dans lequel l’Église a cherché à accroître la participation des fidèles aux pratiques dévotionnelles et sacramentelles.
