Morphologies et dynamiques territoriales des services de messagerie

Abstract : Parcel transport involves light shipments. Its intersectorial and multiple customer characteristics allow it to benefit from the complementarity of
heterogeneous flows. It offers the geographer an enlightening reading of the interface between territory and industry. Substantively, the growing
separation of productive structures and spaces could only be considered through the constant improvement in fluidity of relationships between
diverse economic players. Whereas goods traffic organization and its reliability has become a major concern for industrialists, the notion of networks has now become an imperatively central element in the new production space's cohesiveness. It entails a territory whose coherence depends less on an approach according to the concept of spatial proximity
than on that of accessibility (lower transit and replenishment costs and times in the strictest respect of deadlines). According to C. Raffestin's
expression, the more and more demanding time constraints then lead one to take into consideration the passage from regionalized territoriality to temporalized territoriality, for which parcel transport firms offer an excellent model.
In the context of more and more intense competition, the improvements required in logistics performances in terms of deadlines, costs and quality of service drive parcel service providers to restructure their technical networks' spatially and organizationally within an intensely short time period. Basing them on the study of actual cases, the dissertation examines the operational models of parcel networks and their territorial dynamics. It strives to highlight the geographic elements structuring this activity, on different spatial and temporal scales.
