Les images au labo : Enquête sur les méthodes visuelles à l'échelle d'un laboratoire en sociologie

Abstract : The aim of this article is to observe and analyze, through the case-study of a [French] sociology laboratory [research unit], how visual images constitute an integral part of sociologists' regular research activity. Introducing a questionnaire survey conducted at the Centre Max Weber [in Lyon], the article first highlights the main questions raised by this topic, and describes the various practices in visual sociology reported by researchers within the unit. The article then moves on to present the detailed findings of the survey, resulting in a typology of image-based research practices. Finally, it explores how the survey's outcomes can contribute to a broader reflection on the use of visual methods in social sciences. In particular, the survey sheds light on certain visual research practices that remain hidden or invisibilized by the way sociological research is usually showcased.
