Combating psychological harassment in the workplace:
Processes for management intervention

Résumé

In this paper we focus on the processes whereby an individual at work is singled out and
victimized at work. We define this process as psychological harassment and review the
related lierature. On the basis of a single case involving a French human resource manager,
we describe and illustrate the complex and dynamic processes of psychological harassment.
To help managers combat psychological harassment in the workplace, we propose an
intervention tool for identifying, managing, and preventing psychological harassment
behavior. We argue managers may effectively combat psychological harassment in the
workplace when they utilize the proposed tool in a systematic manner and carefully consider
the implications of intervention.
