Three Waters of Havana. JCN. Forestier, Heritage and Future of a System?
Las tres aguas de La Habana. JCN. Forestier. ¿Herencia y futuro de un sistema?
Résumé
The space generated by the three waters of Havana: sea, bay, and river, defines its morphology. The article examines the importance of these water elements as a basis for J.C.N. Forestier’s systemic planning for Havana (1926). The objective is to situate this heritage and consider its importance towards future planning. They are compared through historical and current iconographies, the water spaces that Forestier integrates as urban structural components: the bay and its entrance as a historical foundation and heritage anchored to the geographical territory, the Malecón as connector of the maritime front and the river Almendares as a vital resource and element of landscape and habitat. Given the current water fragility due to floods, drought, pollution and sanitation, Forestier’s System represents a unifying and integrating concept that reinforces the role of water as the key to sustainable and future rehabilitation for Havana.
El espacio generado por las aguas de La Habana: mar, bahíay rio, definen su morfología. El articuloexamina la importancia de los elementos hídricoscitados como base en la planificaciónsistémicade J.C.N. Forestier para La Habana (1926). El objetivo es situar esta herencia y considerar su importancia hacia planificaciones futuras. Se comparan a travésde iconografíashistóricasy actuales los espacios hídricosque Forestier integra como componentes estructurales urbanos: la bahíay su entrada, como fundaciónhistóricay patrimonio anclado al territorio geográfico;elMalecón, como conector del frente marítimo;y el rioAlmendares, como recurso vital y elemento de paisaje y hábitat.
