Can an industrial group be restructured “properly”?
Peut-on restructurer un groupe industriel « proprement » ?

Through the history of the Saint-Gobain group between the merger with Pont-à-Mousson in 1970 to the end of the 1990s, we show how the necessary organizational adjustments were made to both implement a new strategy and coping with external shocks on the business. The dismissals that followed were carried out as part of workforce redeployment operations. Although Saint-Gobain did not invent this system, it helped to popularize it to make it a mechanism for social treatment of workforce reductions which will then be taken up by law. Through this example, it is a singular variety of capitalism that emerges, for which labor is not a simple adjustment variable.
Au travers de l’histoire du groupe Saint-Gobain entre la fusion avec Pont-à-Mousson en 1970 et la fin des années 1990, nous montrons comment se sont faits les ajustements organisationnels nécessaires pour tout à la fois mettre en place une nouvelle stratégie et faire face aux chocs externes subis par l’entreprise. Les licenciements qui s’en sont suivis ont été réalisés dans le cadre d’opérations de reclassement de la main-d’œuvre. Si Saint-Gobain n’a pas inventé ce dispositif, il a contribué à le populariser pour en faire un mécanisme de traitement social des réductions d’effectifs qui sera ensuite repris par la loi. Au travers de cet exemple, c’est une variété singulière de capitalisme qui se dessine, pour laquelle la main-d’œuvre n’est pas une simple variable d’ajustement.
