Résumé
The references to the atheists of Italy are very numerous in the Naudeana published and manuscript; especially the manuscript of Vienna: Staatsbibliothek, cod. Palat. 7071. This manuscript demonstrates that Patin's information essentially comes from conversations with Gabriel Naudé on his return from Italy to Paris. In other words, they are first-hand and therefore of primary importance for the history of atheism and free thought at the beginning of the modern era. But above all their re-reading is essential today, after Gianluca Mori demonstrated, on the basis of philological arguments that are difficult to contest, that Guy Patin is the author of the clandestine atheist treatise Theophrastus Redivivus.
Les références aux athées d'Italie sont très nombreuses dans les Naudeana édités et manuscrits; tout particulièrement le manuscrit de Vienne: Staatsbibliothek, cod. Palat. 7071. Ce manuscrit démontre que les informations de Patin proviennent essentiellement de conversations avec Gabriel Naudé lors de ses retours d'Italie à Paris. Autant dire qu'elles sont de première main et donc de la première importance pour l'histoire de l'athéisme et de la libre pensée au début de l'époque moderne. Mais surtout leur relecture s'impose aujourd'hui, après que Gianluca Mori ait démontré, sur la base d'arguments philologiques difficilement contestables, que Guy Patin est l'auteur du traité athée clandestin Theophrastus Redivivus.
