Djibril Tamsir Niane and the writing of Soundjata: The Inventor of Origins, Between History and Literature

Throughout his life Djibril Tamsir Niane never stopped rewriting Soundjata’s story, both in his historical research texts and in his literary accounts. This hesitation between history and literature on the scale of a life and work that marked Guinea, and provided a hero to a large part of the continent since Soundjata acquired a pan-African aura, constitutes a moment in African history. One can decide to read it as an incoherence, a freedom taken with history. However, this dual career as a novelist and historian in the service of “the African people,” as the title of his latest work indicates, illustrates fifty years of uses of history in which the historian is a craftsman whose work must have a social utility. Through the study of these different texts, I propose analyzing the place of the figure of Soundjata according to Niane in Guinea, but above all the place of this intellectual figure, whose political commitment is intensely linked to his academic commitment. I also question the place of his informants and sources in the making of history.
Niane n’a eu de cesse de réécrire l’histoire de Soundjata, toute sa vie, tant dans ses textes de recherches historiques que dans ses récits littéraires. Cette hésitation entre histoire et littérature, à l’échelle d’une vie et d’une oeuvre qui aura marqué la Guinée (et fourni un héros à une grande partie du continent, puisque Soundjata a acquis une aura panafricaine), constitue un moment de l’histoire africaine : l’on peut décider de le lire comme une incohérence, une liberté prise avec l’histoire. Mais cette double carrière de romancier et d’historien au service “ des peuples africains ”, comme l’indique le titre de son dernier ouvrage, illustre bien plutôt cinquante années d’usages de l’histoire, où l’historien est un artisan dont l’oeuvre doit avoir une utilité sociale. Par l’étude de ces différents textes, je propose d’analyser la place de la figure de Soundjata selon Djibril Tamsir Niane en Guinée, mais surtout la place même de cette figure d’intellectuel, dont l’engagement politique est intensément lié à son engagement scientifique. Je propose d’interroger également la place de ses informateurs et de ses sources dans la fabrique de l’histoire.
