Running out of tap water one day? Territorial distancing from the effects of climate change
Manquer un jour d’eau au robinet ? La mise à distance territoriale des effets du changement climatique

The study concerns the social and territorialized representations of domestic water services and their vulnerability to climate change among two groups of rural Mediterranean inhabitants and elected officials. It combined i) an associative response method; ii) mental maps; iii) semi-structured interviews and iv) a participatory learning process. The representations and their interpersonal variations show a gradient of territorial anchorage, according to the "distance" of the people from the water network. The dissociated visions of the urban and the global water cycle reinforce a psychological distance of climate change risk. The learning system has changed knowledge, but not practices. This distancing from the climate and the resistance of behaviours are a challenge for a policy of adaptation. This studies is part of a ZABR project.
Dans le cadre d'un projet de recherche avec la ZABR (Apprendre la rareté de l’eau sur un territoire, pour aujourd’hui et demain), nous avons étudié les représentations sociales et territorialisées des services d’eau potable et de leur vulnérabilité au changement climatique chez deux groupes d’habitants et d’élus ruraux méditerranéens. Nous avons combiné i) une méthode associative : ii) des cartes mentales dessinées ; iii) des entretiens semi-directifs et iv) un dispositif d’apprentissage participatif. Les représentations et leurs variations interpersonnelles témoignent d’un gradient d’ancrage territorial, selon la « distance » des personnes au réseau d’eau. Les visions dissociées du petit et grand cycle de l’eau confortent une mise à distance du changement climatique. Le dispositif d’apprentissage a fait évoluer les savoirs, mais pas les pratiques.
