Abstract : The minutes of the Paris clerks of buildings are generally factual and austere records. Often governed by a judicial context, they “must be in conformity with the truth, contain clear and precise detail of all essential circumstances, & the systematic mention of everything that has happened in the order of time” (Guyot, 1785). The clerk assigned to the transcription of an expert's report cannot therefore afford any flippancy in the manner of drawing up his report. However, sometimes in spite of the rigid formality specific to these reports, there appears a “raw trace of lives which in no way asked to be told in this way” (Farge, 1989). This study concerns one of these spontaneous testimonies, which arose during the visit of the carpentry models of the cathedral church of Senlis, commissioned by the architect Jean-Jacob Guerne (1748-1797) from the master carpenter Antoine Maréchal. This expertise, conducted by Pierre-Marie Giraud on June 26 of 1786, turns out to be the expression of the latent tensions that opposed architects and craftsmen at the end of the early modern era. For the contemporary historian, this source constitutes an essential contribution to understanding the process of affirmation of a profession, the exercise of which is not framed by any specific legal structure. Delivered to a limited public audience – strictly institutional – this trace of life is the counterpart of private testimonies – contained in correspondence and diaries – but also of public manifestos which emanate from widely distributed print editions.
