L’identification des consonnes et voyelles nasales par les adultes implantés cochléaires francophones

The identification by 82 French cochlear implantees of 11 vowels /i,e,ɛ,a,y,ø,o,u,ã,ɛ̃,ɔ̃/, and 16 consonants /p,t,k,b,d,g,f,s,ʃ,v,z,ʒ,l,m,n,ʁ/ pronounced by 3 speech therapists at direct voice without repetition was analyzed after an initial post-implant period (between 1 and 4 months post-implant), and then again after a longer period (between 12 and 120 months). Results indicate that after implantation, the 3 nasal vowels /ɑ̃,ɛ̃,ɔ̃/ were significantly less well recognized than the 8 oral vowels, both at the early stage (36% vs. 77%, p < 0.05) and the later stage (57% vs. 87%, p < 0.05). In 98% of the confusions at the early stage and 94% at the later stage, the nasal vowels were identified as an oral vowel. The type of confusion between oral and nasal vowels differs from what is generally described in literature for both normal hearing and hearing impaired listeners, where nasal vowels tend to be confused with each other. The nasal feature of the consonants is well identified as nasal, but /n/ tends to be identified as /m/.
Les scores de reconnaissance des 11 voyelles /i,e,ɛ,a,y,ø,o,u,ã,ɛ̃,ɔ̃/ et 16 consonnes /p,t,k,b,d,g,f,s,ʃ,v,z,ʒ,l,m,n,ʁ/ du français, prononcées par 3 orthophonistes, à voix directe, sans répétition, ont été analysés à un délai post-implant précoce (entre 1 et 4 mois post-IC) et tardif (entre 12 et 120 mois). Les résultats montrent qu’après implantation cochléaire, les trois voyelles nasales /ɑ̃,ɛ̃,ɔ̃/ sont significativement moins bien reconnues que les huit voyelles orales, aussi bien au stade précoce (36% vs. 77%, p < 0.05), qu’au stade tardif (57% vs. 87%, p < 0.05). Dans 98% des cas de confusions au stade précoce et 94% au stade tardif, les voyelles nasales ont été confondues non pas entre-elles, mais avec une voyelle orale. Les confusions mises en évidence dans cette étude sont très différentes de celles habituellement observées chez les personnes avec un appareillage auditif ou même chez les normo-entendants, chez qui les voyelles nasales sont en général confondues entre elles. Dans la catégorie des consonnes, le trait de nasalité est bien reconnu, mais /n/ a tendance à être reconnu comme /m/.
