Le site des Causses à Saint-André de Sangonis (VIe siècle) et la place alimentaire des animaux dans la moyenne vallée de l’Hérault durant le haut Moyen Âge

Abstract : Knowledge of the diachronic occupation of the Bas-Languedoc region is evidence of the attractive character of the Hérault terraces as of the recent Neolithic period. This includes the results of the first surveys, launched at the end of the 1970s, as well as those of the numerous preventive excavations following the increasing urbanisation of the valley and the overhaul of its communication networks. That is why the central Hérault archaeology is one of the most active in the region. Unknown until then, the Causses site was identified and then excavated during the interventions motivated by the A750 motorway construction project. The study was carried out during the winter of 2003, as part of a vast operation (known as the Lagarel operation), whose footprint was extended to three other sites located in the immediate vicinity. The archaeological data (that will be called “ conventional”), in other words those deduced from the chronology and architecture of the establishment – not to mention the material culture elements – are struggling to properly characterize the occupation. For this reason, an important place has been allotted to the archaeozoological study, with a view to broadening the interpretative field. From the restitution of the site itself to a regional perspective, the aim was to understand these sites dynamics from a food and, more generally, an agricultural point of view.
