Le devenir-auteur de Marcel Proust, 1900-1908

The aim of this article is to contend that, from 1900 to 1908, through a long process of writing, the writer Marcel Proust became an author thanks to his work in translating and presenting the work of the British aesthetician John Ruskin. Our postulate is that his great work À la recherche du temps perdu is not the starting point, but the deepening and culmination of the maturation of the “author-being” that M. Proust became after 1908. We show that the translation, preface and annotations of La Bible d’Amiens, which M. Proust published in the Mercure de France in 1904, were the starting point of a sideways writing which, by gradually asserting itself, allowed the writer to invest an authorial “I”, and to create his pen name, by which he traces a singular artist’s figure.
Le propos de cet article est de soutenir que, de 1900 à 1908, par un long
cheminement d’écriture, l’écrivain Marcel Proust est devenu un auteur grâce à son travail
de traduction et de présentation de l’oeuvre de l’esthéticien britannique John Ruskin.
Notre postulat est que sa grande oeuvre, À la recherche du temps perdu, n’est pas
le point de départ, mais approfondissement et aboutissement de cette maturation de
« l’être-auteur » qu’est devenu M. Proust après 1908. Nous montrons que la traduction,
la préface et les annotations de La Bible d’Amiens, que M. Proust publie au Mercure de
France en 1904, ont constitué le point de départ d’une écriture de biais qui, s’affirmant
peu à peu, a permis à l’écrivain d’investir un « je » d’auteur, et de construire son nom
d’écriture, par lequel il trace une figure d’artiste singulier.
