Keeping pace with the seasons: the pastoral lives of Yakuts and Kazakhs, whether nomadic or not

This article explores the role of seasons in the nomadic and pastoral practices of two Turkish-speaking pastoralist populations who live in large areas of Inner Asia with marked continental climates: the Yakuts in alaas of the Eastern Siberia taiga forest region, and the Kazakhs in the steppes of Central Asia. Different forms of pastoral mobility are practiced with the aim of softening the seasons and prolonging their best moments. Over the past century, these populations have adapted with flexibility to historical changes, creating original forms of sedentary life. The calendar of pastoral activities is marked by a strong degree of seasonality, linked to the reproductive cycle of livestock. A dichotomy separates two contrasting halves of the year: the warm season being largely devoted to preparing the harsh season which will follow.
L’article traite du rôle des saisons dans le nomadisme et dans le pastoralisme de deux peuples de pasteurs turcophones qui vivent dans de grandes régions d’Asie intérieure marquées par la continentalité : les Iakoutes, qui habitent les alaas dans la taïga de Sibérie orientale, et les Kazakhs, dans les steppes d’Asie centrale. Les différentes formes de mobilité pastorale pratiquées visent à adoucir les saisons et à en prolonger les meilleurs moments. Depuis un siècle, elles se sont adaptées avec flexibilité aux mutations historiques, engendrant des formes originales de sédentarité. Le calendrier des activités pastorales est marqué par une forte saisonnalité, liée au cycle reproductif du bétail. Une dichotomie se crée entre deux moitiés d’année contrastées, la belle saison étant consacrée à la préparation de la saison rude qui lui succédera.
