Chateaubriand, nouvelles perspectives critiques

Abstract : This book is the result of a symposium held in 2018 at the Singer Polignac Foundation on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the birth of François-René de Chateaubriand. It traces new critical perspectives on this capital writer. It addresses three questions that are at the heart of his work: "Figures of the Author", "History and Society" and "Religious Concern and Conviction". Which new figures does Chateaubriand embody? How does he envisage the writing of History, at a time when society and political life are shaken by the Revolution? What tensions run through his religious commitment and his relationship with God, constantly haunted by anxiety and doubt?
