Thermo and Electro-Switchable Cs⊂{Fe 4 -Fe 4 } Cubic Cage: Spin-Transition and Electrochromism

Résumé

A mixed valence Cs⊂{Fe 4-Fe 4 } cyanido-cube was synthesized and structurally characterized. The molecule, which is robust in solution, shows a remarkable electronic versatility. Electrochromic properties associated with nine different electronic states are observed in solution together with a thermo-induced spin-transition in the solid state. Molecular switches, i.e. molecules able to change their physical (optical, magnetic, etc.) properties under external stimuli are receiving intense research efforts because of their potential application in the fabrication of functional materials or nano-devices.
