Vulnérabilité et résistance des bostan (jardins potagers) millénaires d’Istanbul

Abstract : This article aims at analysing the role of open spaces in the transformation of the city, from the standpoint of Istanbul’s agricultural landscapes. Choosing the bostan (vegetable gardens) as the subject for this study stems from the historical foundation of the local agriculture’s inherent traces in Istanbul’s urban spaces. Nowadays, the challenges are manifold, and the pressure on the metropolis’s open spaces is unstoppable. The city is enduring a remarkable reduction in the number of agricultural lands, due to the widespread and fast urbanisation, ever since the 1950s. While large-scale projects expand the city’s eastern and western borders, the historical peninsula is also affected by urban renewal projects. Our study field is based on one of these considerably threatened spaces, on a 1985 UNESCO World heritage site: the historical bostan (vegetable gardens) in Yedikule (the fortress of the Seven Towers), in the southern part of Istanbul’s Land Walls. Given that the Land Walls and their physical environment represent a multi-layer location, they delineate both the historical peninsula and our study field. Although there are divergences in visions about the bostan’s future, a composition and decomposition work appears to be necessary in order to find a new language to rethink together these spaces’s future and go beyond each stakeholder’s interest. With this article, we will try to demonstrate the bostan’s historical evolution, their relationship with the city, as well as their potential for the formation of a multi-layer and fertile city, i.e. the roles they might play in the reconciliation between mankind and nature.
