Abstract : This paper proposes a state-feedback control of both grid and circulating current in modular multilevel converters (MMCs), which ensures that the input-coupled dynamics of the two currents to be controlled together. A systematic design procedure is detailed and the strategy is validated on a comprehensive MATLAB®/Simulink® model of a three-phase MMC. Simulation results show that, compared with the conventional control featuring two separate control loops, the proposed control shows better performance under unbalanced grid conditions.
