This paper discusses land use, crop husbandry practices and breeding during the Late Iron Age and Roman period, based on the animal and vegetal remains recovered from archaeological sites. Investigations were carried out within the ERC advanced grants RurLand programme – covering the rural lands of north-eastern Gaul, from the Late La Tène period to Late Antiquity1. Although the RurLand project integrated the adjacent parts of Belgium, Luxemburg, the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland that were included in ancient Gaul, we focussed purely on north-eastern France; the other regions having already been the subject of recent overviews (Lepetz & Zech-Matterne 2017)
