Le Département de géologie du Musée d'Histoire Naturelle de Lille, des collections à l'image de l'histoire géologique régionale

Abstract : Samples collected between 1864 and 1950, in both an educational and a scientific objectives, by the Faculty of Sciences scientists and the Société géologique du Nord members, constitute the old resource of the geological collections managed by the Natural History Museum of the City of Lille. After a period when these three entities were separated, the museum collections have again been enriched since 1986, to keep also heritage collections. This paper tries to describe the history of the geological collections of the present Natural History Museum, which form nowadays a set of 180 000 samples, one of the five most important of the provincial museums.
