Vie et survie du petit numéraire dans le nord de la Gaule : l’exemple des découvertes de la domus au Grand péristyle de Vieux-la-romaine (Calvados)

Abstract : In the 1990s, the excavations supervised by P. Vipard on the site of the »domus au grand péristyle« in Vieux, which includes the house and two surrounding Roman roads, led to the recovery of an important batch of 668 isolated coins, cautiously registered within their archaeological context. The recent re-examination of these ancient data enables us to study these discoveries within their stratigraphic context. Seven phases, representing a long-term occupation from the end of the 1st to the beginning of the 5th century, have been identified by the archaeologist. They help us to study the volution of the coins within a clear chronological framework, enlightened by all the other artefacts (mainly the pottery). It is thus possible to draw up an illustration of the life and the after-life of some coins. With the predominance of barbarous radiates and aes, the analysis focuses on their presence within each phase of occupation on the site.
