Professional Women in Mesopotamia (Early 2nd mil. BCE): Evidence from the Epistolary Documentation

Texts and images represent ancient Mesopotamian women far less frequently than they do with men, but information about ancient women survives in visual art, archaeology and written sources. Not much is said in the texts about the daily work of a woman in her home, but references found here and there give an idea of their occupations. The paper given during the 2019 UCL Workshop focused on “professional women”, i.e. women paid for their work and whose occupation involves training. Many sources can –and have to– be used to study these women. This presentation was limited to the letter corpus.
