Fondation d’un centre de pèlerinage au Liban
Résumé
On the 21st of August 2004, Bechouate, a Maronite village of Lebanon witnessed an apparition of the Virgin Mary. The main witness was a young Sunni Muslim boy from Jordan. The following days a great number of pilgrims of different religious denominations – mainly Maronites and Shiites- flocked to the village. In order to be understood, the event has to be contextualized historically, socially and politically. The years 2000 are marked, among other things, by the development of the Christian-Muslim dialogue. How this small and remote village did become a vast center of pilgrimage? How a “manifestation” of Mary did develop into a national and political issue? Why such an enthusiasm for this Virgin in particular? Our Lady of Bechouate has peculiar attributes that are built locally. Through the analysis of the inhabitants’ territorial imaginary of “her” region (Dayr al-Ahmar), and the scrutiny of the myth of foundation of her shrine, I shall try to define them and show how they came to make sense on a national level.
En agosto de 2004, Bechouat, una aldea maronita del Líbano, es el teatro de una aparición de la Virgen. El principal testigo es un niño musulmán sunnita de nacionalidad jordana. Durante los días posteriores, una masa importante de peregrinos de diferentes confesiones, principalmente maronitas y chiitas, converge en la aldea.
Para comprenderlo, el hecho tiene que ser reubicado en su contexto político y social, marcado, entre otros, por el desarrollo del diálogo Islam-Cristianismo. ¿Cómo esta pequeña localidad se transformó en un vasto centro de peregrinación? ¿De qué manera una “manifestación” de María se volvió una cuestión nacional y política? ¿Por qué un apasionamiento tan grande por esta Virgen en particular? Nuestra Señora de Bechouat posee atributos singulares construidos localmente. A través del análisis del imaginario territorial de los habitantes de Dayr al-Ahmar, “su” región, y del mito de fundación de su santuario, retrazaré los contornos y mostraré de qué manera se superó la inscripción local para adquirir sentido nacional.

Les jours suivants, un flot important de pèlerins de différentes confessions, principalement maronites et chiites, converge vers le village.
Pour être compris, l’événement doit être replacé dans son contexte politique et social, marqué, entre autres, par le développement du dialogue islamo-chrétien. Comment cette petite localité s’est-elle transformée en un vaste centre de pèlerinage? Comment une «manifestation» de Marie est-elle devenue une affaire nationale et politique? Pourquoi un tel engouement pour cette Vierge en particulier? Notre-Dame de Béchouate possède des attributs singuliers construits localement. À travers l’analyse de l’imaginaire territorial des habitants de Dayr al-Ahmar, «sa» région, et du mythe de fondation de son sanctuaire, j’en retracerai les contours et montrerai comment ils en sont venus à dépasser leur inscription locale pour faire sens au niveau national.
