Fuir les États-Unis pour le Canada. Lectures géographiques d’un refuge littéraire américain
Résumé
This article aims to analyse the geographical patterns in the representation of Canada as a shelter in American fiction through the study of three novels: Canada by Richard Ford, The Shipping News by Annie Proulx and A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving. Canada in these novels is described as a harsh environment, difficult to get used to. But it is also a mirror that reflects the excesses and the negative aspects of the United States that the heroes left behind, and the place where they can paradoxically live the American Dream. The country creates ambiguous belongings and is viewed as a border and a frontier that the heroes need to claim.
Cet article souhaite interroger, à travers la mise en récit du Canada dans trois romans étatsuniens – Canada de Richard Ford, Nœuds et dénouements d’Annie Proulx et Une prière pour Owen de John Irving – les archétypes géographiques continentaux qui fondent la construction du Canada comme refuge dans la littérature américaine. Si le Canada dans ces romans dévoile un espace inhospitalier et difficile à s’approprier, sa fonction de miroir réfléchissant les dérives et les aspects négatifs du pays que les héros ont quitté le dote finalement de qualités susceptibles de faire advenir leur rêve américain. Il constitue à la fois une frontière et un front pionnier, un monde des possibles qui suscite des appartenances ambiguës, faites de proximité et de distance, et conduit à sa reconnaissance.
