Anomie néolibérale et suicide au travail

Abstract : Suicidal gestures linked to work have increased in frequency worldwide in recent decades and are likely to continue rising in coming years. They can be understood as the extreme expression of a spectrum of individual and social pathologies bred by the general competitive logic that characterizes the new spirit of capitalism. Illustrated in this article by France Télécom-Orange, the hypermodern firm represents a microcosm of the broader shift towards what Michel Foucault called a “neo-liberal” governmentality in which the individual is subordinated to the drive to “govern for the market”. Caged in a web of constraints, people are denied their subjecthood. They become elementary particles in a competitive machine and are compelled under threat of sanction into blind obedience. Daily confronted to tragic conflicts of duty in a universe without rules besides the injunction to perform, subjects lose their capacity of judgment, their self-esteem and their self-confidence. Clinical experience tends to show that the individuals most at risk are those employees most attached to a s.personal and professional ethic that they are forced to silence or transgres
