Chapitre 18 – Entre développements des espaces de commerce et mutations urbaines, le quartier de ‘Aziziyyé à Alep

Abstract : ‘Aziziye, in northwestern Aleppo, is a residential area that was developed in the 19th century and progressively integrated into Aleppo’s city centre. During the 1960’s, it was the main residence of the middle-high Christian bourgeoisie. Subsequently, the area transformed rapidly. Although ‘Aziziye’s economic activity was based on some ‘small, local shops’, it experienced a spectacular development as well as an expansion into more diverse clientele. ‘Aziziye was changed from an essentially residential area into a ‘modern’ commercial area. However, in the last fifteen years, ‘Aziziye has been through another transformation: the amount of commercial activity has increased, and its clientele have changed to include more working class citizens. Moreover, a big part of its shopkeepers have been replaced. This new phase has to be put into context within the major changes faced by commercial sites and activities in Aleppo, including their move to new and affluent residential areas of the western suburbs and the northwestern area of the city
