La viticulture dans l’ouest de la Gaule Lyonnaise : les pressoirs de Parville (Eure) et de Piriac-sur-Mer (Loire-Atlantique)

Abstract : In 2005 and 2006, two excavations at Parville (Eure) and Piriac-sur-Mer (Loire-Atlantique) led to the identification of timber and daub presses connected to wine-producing. At Parville, inside an environment dated to the 3rd century AD, pits to anchor vertical poles similar to the prints of a mechanism found at Luzarches (Val-d’Oise) allow to reconstruct a lever and screw press. At Piriac-sur-Mer, trenches for horizontal beams and pits made possible the reconstitution of a new kind of lever and winch press installed in the second half of the 2nd century or in the 3rd century AD. In the latter case grape pips and adjacent installations (vats, chai) confirm this interpretation. These two discoveries give the opportunity to reopen the viticulture file of west and north-western Lugdunensis: the overall data (literary sources, iconography, carpology, planting marks, barrels, amphorae) are registered. They result in a first appraisal which confirms the actual presence of viticulture in the Roman period, but probably less extensive than in other provinces.
