The Ensérune silos. New proposals about former discoveries
Les silos d'ensérune. Nouvelles propositions pour d'anciennes découvertes
Résumé
The excavations of the site of Ensérune, commonly called “silos”, are traditionally dated to the 6-4th Cent. BC. The function assigned to them is that of reserves of food or storage of cereals. The last hypothesis gave rise to theories about the development of trade between Greeks and natives in the South of France, who would have provided grain in exchange for Greek goods. We propose a later timeline for these structures (2-1th Cent. BC), and identify a feature that we believe to be related to water management, but also, in particular when they form an important group, to craft activities
requiring water, as for example a tannery/dyeing industry.
