Influence of the filler-matrix interface on ageing by gamma-radiation of ATH filled EPDM
Résumé
Insulation sheath of electrical cables in nuclear plants are commonly made of EPDM, a terpolymer with a remarkable resistance to chemical aging. Under the irradiating environment such as.-radiation, damage occurs. The polymer lifetime, estimated from mechanical tests, is proven to be the precursor of the loss of their electrical insulation properties. Mineral fillers (like ATH) are commonly blended with EPDM as they improve both the mechanical and fire retardant properties. Nevertheless, the role of the filler-matrix interface in the mechanisms of the degradation induced by irradiation need to be further understood. To do so, the degradation of EPDM filled with ATH of different sizes has been studied.
