Liberté, égalité, royauté ! De l'idiosyncrasie politique morrisienne

Résumé

This paper focuses on the analysis of Gouverneur Morris's vision of the French Revolution. The main question raised is why this republican Patriot actively supported the French monarchy when he publicly declared at the Philadelphia Convention in 1787, " I am as little a friend to monarchy as any gentleman. " This paradoxical stance will be examined through Morris's definition of two major concepts, liberty and equality. Vocal advocate of individual rights and defender of natural inequality, Morris's ideological position challenged logical assumptions on the universality of the Atlantic revolutions. Yet, while Morris worked in counter-revolutionary plots in 1791 in Paris, he remained, as revealed by his diary, a republican. In a transatlantic perspective, it will be shown that even though Morris seemed to go against the universalist wave of revolutionary ideals of natural equality and collective rights, his voice enriches this historiographical narrative, and offers a different outlook on Atlantic connections.
