Use of potassium ferrate for groundwater treatment.
Résumé
Several groundwaters from southwestern France are naturally contaminated by iron, manganese and arsenic. The removal of these species is necessary to produce drinking water according to the regulation levels (200 μg L-1 for iron, 50 μg L-1 manganese and 10 μg L-1 for arsenic). It appears that Fe(VI) might be an appropriate chem. agent for the removal of these 3 species. Pilot expts. were conducted to test removal of iron, manganese and arsenic from a groundwater by a new potassium ferrate salt. This study indicated that with the new potassium ferrate synthesized by STRADIA, an effective removal of the three species was obtained at pilot scale. The use of this unique reagent at small concns. (some g m-3 of water), with a processing time of 20 min, ensures the oxidn. and coagulation steps.
