Constitutional Dynameric Networks for Membranes

Modular strategies for the fabrication of organic frameworks, in which the diffusional solutes (ions, water, molecules, or gas molecules) mutually interact within specific transport pathways, can be employed for the fabrication of constitutional dynameric membranes. The combination of low molecular monomers with core connector centers results in the formation of glassy organic frameworks/rubbery organic frameworks (GOFs/ROFs) for dynameric materials with improved/tunable mass transfer functions. The dynamic polymers, or dynamers, generated from reversibly covalent/noncovalent interacting monomers, offer the possibility of addressing these issues.The dynamic covalent (dynameric), metallodynameric, and supramolecular/dynameric membranes presented here, combining molecular and supramolecular features, may provide a pathway to achieve the molecular limit for the construction of membranes with high diffusional behaviors. Dynameric membranes can be used to push the limit toward the control of gas- or ion-selective transport through constitutional networks, finely tuned at the molecular level.
