Neoselachii du Maastrichtien au sud du Niger
Résumé
Numerous and various remains of the Neoselachii can be found in the Nigerian sites of the Maastrichtian period. Nevertheless the fossils are scattered, never being connected each other. Five species among the seven ones presented here were already known ; yet we provide new elements and precisions about them. The two new species belong to Rhombodontidae, one of them looking like a recently described Spanish species but without identity. We also try to match the fossil items to other ones for each species ; however, this is not always clearly feasible. Coprolites are studied in the end of this article ; they are abundant and generally in good condition but it is a challenge to specify their perpetrators. We make use of thanatometric and statistical analysis in order to solve some special problems. We also try to understand the eating patterns of the animals by means of dental wear observations. Concerning the ecological features, the small number of species points out very separate ecologic niches for them. At present, three Sclerorhynchidae, three Myliobatiformes and one Lamnidae are known. All are fairly tall : their lengths generally exceed one meter.
