Characterization and comparison of RF MEMS switch for active detuning of endoluminal receiver coils

Résumé

The use of receiver endoluminal coils is an attractive solution to achieve locally high spatial resolution in deep regions in the body such as colon wall1. During the radiofrequency (RF) transmit phase, the receiver-coil must be detuned from the RF transmitter-coil to avoid inhomogeneity of the RF magnetic field in proximity and the extra noise in the image due to the mutual inductance between coils2. For this purpose, several detuning methods were proposed in literature such as active detuning based on PINdiode (galvanic)3 or optical connection4. Recently, Micro-Electro-Mechanical-Systems (MEMS) switch(GE Healthcare) was introduced5 to have a fast detuning and a higher SNR6. The purpose of this work was to compare the tuning/detuning characteristics of three detuning circuits and their impacts on the coil performances.
