Basis of Electromagnetic Compatibility of Integrated Circuits : A modeling approach using IC-EMC

Abstract : Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) has become a major concern for integrated circuits (ICs), yet it is still not perfectly understood by electronics designers. Electromagnetic emission and immunity issues need to be thoroughly understood by professionals in order to successfully design their ICs, packages or printed circuit boards (PCBs). Modelling is a practical and efficient way of analysing the root cause of EMC problems, predicting EMC performance or validating a design to mitigate an EMC problem before fabrication. This book targets graduate and post-graduate students, in addition to electronic design engineers, already familiar with the basic notions of electricity and electronics, and wanting to learn more about EMC at IC level. It covers all the basic notions needed to learn how to model circuits and their surrounding environment with respect to emission, immunity and signal integrity issues. After a brief introduction to the theoretical concepts and technological trends of ICs, the authors give an overview of the different EMC problems that affect electronic devices, and then describe measurement methods for characterising IC EMC. The book also provides basic techniques for modelling a circuit's surrounding environment (e.g. passive components, PCBs or test benches). It then addresses the modelling of IC emission and susceptibility based on state-of-the-art standards (ICEM, IBIS and ICIM). Real case studies are studied and modelled step by step. This book is based on IC-EMC, a free companion tool developed by the authors in order to illustrate theoretical concepts and explore practical case studies, facilitating the comparison between measurement and simulation results. The book not only provides in-depth explanations but also a series of exercises with associated corrections to help the reader become familiar with modelling the EMC of ICs.
