L’ambiance comme concept de la géographie culturelle francophone : Défis et perspectives

Abstract : This text is proposing a greater consideration of the concept of ambiance in French-language cultural geography by examining the terms of opportunities, issues and challenges that emerge from this relationship. The argument is structured in four parts. Firstly, the observation is made that in the English-language and German-language contexts, the concept of ambiance has recently found its place in the field of cultural geography, whereas in the francophone world it has become situated mainly in the field of architectural and urban research. Secondly, a review of work on ambiance in English-language and German-language cultural geography shows that ultimately there is little work that explicitly addresses the contribution of the concept of ambiance for cultural geography, thus leaving this question open for further research. Starting from this observation, we will develop three suggestions for a heuristic linking of the concept of ambiance to issues of cultural geography. The last part provides an outline of some research prospects for ambiance as an operating concept within French-language cultural geography.
