Abstract : Official painter of the Navy and founder of the French artists colonial Society, Louis-Jules Dumoulin has travelled the world and collected a lot of photographs. In 1888-89, then in 1897, he carried out two official missions in Asia leading him to visit Japan and bring back a collection of almost eight hundred photographs taken or bought mainly in Yokohama. The main goal of this article is to present his collection and try to reconstitute the journeys of Dumoulin and the origin of his photographs. It also deals with the influence of Japan on life and works of Dumoulin.
