From grammar to meaning: Towards a framework for studying synchronic language contact
Résumé
Research on language contact in general and on Suriname in particular, has to date largely focused on so-called historical language contact. Researchers examine established, permanent linguistic features of a language, for one reason or another, that are assumed to have emerged due to contact-induced language change at an earlier period in the history of that language. This research is traditionally part of historical linguistics and follows a comparative historical linguistic approach.
