From grammar to meaning: Towards a framework for studying synchronic language contact
Résumé
The aim of this paper is to assess current contact linguistic research. The paper argues that the current approach is essentially diachronic in nature and that the tools are not sufficient for examining synchronic language contact. In order to carry out synchronic language contact it is necessary to draw on methods in social approaches to language. The paper then discusses these and a case study coming from research on the creoles of Suriname and French Guiana.
