The public’s need for a way of recognizing and preserving their photographs has increased within the last few years. This leads to publish this guide to describe - simply and concisely - the emerging discipline of photograph conservation that will include the most recent developments in our understanding of how to conserve the photographs that were made prior to the arrival of digital imaging processes.
The book is structured, not as a chronological presentation of one historic process after another, but as a classification of processes that brings together objects that resemble one another. This permits readers to find what they are looking for by making their own observations and deductions. The user first determines the nature of the image: Is it a positive or a negative? Processes are then divided up according to the nature of their supports (metal, glass, paper, plastic, etc.) and then further split into color images and black-and-white images. (Or monochrome rather than black-and-white – they may be more brown or blue than black.) The processes included here have been selected for their historic or typological importance. Other processes, much less common, have been omitted. The second part of the book is devoted to conservation.
Au cours de ces dernières décennies, l’intérêt pour la photographie ancienne n’a fait que s’accroître auprès d’un public très divers : collectionneurs, conservateurs, archivistes mais également amateurs soucieux de conserver au mieux de précieux témoignages familiaux ou régionaux aux travers de quelques images. Souci de préservation d’autant plus justifié pour la photographie qu’elle est sans doute l’un des biens culturels les plus populaires et les plus répandus dans notre société. Connaître et reconnaître les photographies, savoir comment les manipuler, les ranger est l’objectif de ce guide, car malgré une histoire relativement courte, ces 150 dernières années ont vu naître une multitude de procédés photographiques ayant chacun leur spécificité et réclamant des soins adaptés. Cet ouvrage porte à la connaissance du public les évolutions les plus récentes dans ce domaine avec un souci de clarté, de concision et de simplicité.
