Les controverses autour du travail en 1848

Abstract : In 1848, the political struggles about the content of the new Republic led to a series of controversies about the concept of work. During these controversies, socialism and moderate republicanism were constituted as antagonistic ideologies. We consider three of these controversies, which take their roots in the history of the workers’ movement and of the concept of work. The first, in the Spring of 1848, was about the links between work and citizenship and concerned the question of workers’ candidacies. The second controversy, starting in June 1848, opposed Proudhon to the National about the role of work in the creation of economic value. The last one, occurring during the whole constituent process of 1848, was about the right to work. By the time it ended, the Republic and socialism had become two distinct ideologies divided by several antagonistic positions about the concept of work.
