L'amalgame : un aperçu historique

This paper explores the history of the notion of blending. It is argued that this notion was first given a theoretical status in the neogrammarian movement, u nder the name of contamination, coined by Hermann Paul. Contamination is closely related to analogy, which notion was pressed into service in order to account for some exceptions to phonetic laws. Because the focus was on unintentional instances, the study of contaminations laid the framework for the first systematic analyses of speech errors and accidental blends. The mostly synchronic and morphological analysis of lexical blends constitutes another strand of research which seems to be posterior to the neogrammarian school and relatively independent from it, though both intersect in some studies. Particular emphasis is placed on this strand, its evolution, and on the various definitions and typologies of lexical blends which have been proposed in the literature. The last part of the paper tries to map the course of a more recent line of research which is rooted in cognitive linguistics. This line of research, it is shown, brings back a theoretical pattern that is, in some respects, reminiscent of the neogrammarians.

Cet article explore l’histoire de la notion d’amalgame. Il est suggéré que cette notion a pour la première fois été dotée d’un statut théorique chez les néogrammairiens, sous le nom de contamination, terme forgé par Hermann Paul. La contamination a une parenté étroite avec la notion d’analogie, qui servait à rendre compte de certaines exceptions aux lois phonétiques. En raison de la priorité accordée aux phénomènes non-intentionnels, l’étude des contaminations a fourni le cadre des premières analyses systématiques des lapsus et des amalgames accidentels. L’étude principalement synchronique et morphologique des amalgames lexicaux constitue une filière qui est, semble-t-il, postérieure aux néogrammairiens et relativement indépendante, même s’il existe des points de contact. L’évolution de cette filière, les définitions et les typologies des amalgames qui ont été proposées dans la littérature font l’objet d’un examen particulier. La dernière partie tente de retracer une dernière filière, qui est née du sein de la linguistique cognitive. On montre que cette filière reconduit une configuration théorique qui, par certains aspects, rappelle les néogrammairiens.
