The Lao kinship system is described in comparison with its Siamese counterpart. This sheds light on the considerable importance this system bestows on the senior/junior dichotomy. This dichotomy is then placed within a more general sociocultural context ; and its impact, analyzed on terminology as well as matrimonial practices
