EAnalysis: developing a sound-based music analytical tool

Pierre Couprie

Résumé

Analysing sound-based music needs specific methods and tools. Methods come from compositional technics and theoretical concepts developed by composers and musicologists. Many of them are convenient to analyse current music creations, interpretation, or video music. However, studying these works also need specific computer tools. Musicologists, teachers, musicians, or composers use software to play, edit and create music, but these software are not always efficient for analysis or deep studying. Moreover, these software use very conventional representations of sound that are not adapted to all works, e.g. a linear spectrogram is not a good representation of complex textures of sounds. Finally, most of these works have no scores or have incomplete scores then, musicologist needs to create musical transcription of sounds or representation of analysis to study or present them. EAnalysis have been developed to resolve some of these problems and to experiment new methods of musical analysis. I created this piece of software to design transcriptions and representations from one or several audio-visual files. It combines tools to realise beautiful graphical transcriptions but also tools to experiment acoustical representations from spectral analysis or audio descriptors extraction. EAnalysis must be considered as an experimental laboratory to study sound-based music.
