Teacher and textbook: Reflection on the SDT-model

This study investigates in-depth how two teachers use the textbook in mathematics classrooms. Their use of the textbook was analysed in the light of a socio-didac-tical tetrahedron (SDT) which proved to be a powerful model to describe many aspects of textbook use that we encountered. Our results showed that the teacher acted as the mediator between the textbook and the students, but the lower part of the SDT helped us to identify the influence of social factors on textbook use which is an aspect that cannot be disregarded.
