CONTROL OF AN ARTIFICIAL MOUTH PLAYING A TROMBONE AND ANALYSIS OF SOUND DESCRIPTORS ON EXPERIMENTAL DATA

Abstract : This paper deals with a robotized artificial mouth adapted to brass instruments. A technical description of the robotic platform is drawn, including calibrations, initialization processes , and modes of control. An experimental protocol is proposed and the repeatability is checked. Then, experiments are conducted on a trombone for several types of quasi-static controls. Sound descriptors (fundamental frequency , roughness, energy) of measured acoustic signals are estimated and used to build cartographies indexed by the control inputs. An analysis reveals that several stable notes can easily be reached using a basic mapping with respect to these control inputs. However, a histogram of fundamental frequencies shows that some notes in the high range that can be played by musicians are not reached by the artificial mouth. It also reveals that some notes are difficult to play in the middle range. This exploration suggests some possible improvements of the machine that are finally discussed.
